About Ruby

While waiting for a delayed flight back to Cape Town recently, my husband couldn't help but be distracted by a beautiful, stylish, and confident fellow-passenger outside the boarding gate. He remarked to me that she was probably an international model going to Cape Town for a shoot. Much to his chagrin, when we eventually got on board she landed up sitting next to me, and we started chatting. Angela was from Benin, but had been in South Africa for 16 years. Turns out we both did our Masters in Political Science at the University of Cape Town. She is now doing a PhD in Development Finance, and works for the Joburg Metropolitan Council. |
Then she asked what I did, and I told her that I have a fashion label called Ruby. Next thing, she hitches down her jeans to expose a cute pair of pink knickers with hearts that I designed seven years ago. "I love Ruby," she said excitedly, "I can't believe I'm sitting next to you!". I might not have become a prominent politician with a fleet of 4x4s to my name. But at least I know that in my time on this planet, I have brought a little sugar and spice to thousands of bedrooms and boardrooms across the globe...
